Overview

This experimental combination of caffeine and alcohol was utilized in a clinical research study conducted by Boston University (NCT00515294) to evaluate the interaction between a central nervous system stimulant and a depressant. The intervention consisted of Hurricane High Gravity beer (8.1% alcohol by volume) supplemented with anhydrous caffeine powder (69 mg per 12 oz) to achieve a target blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.12 g%. The study was designed as a Phase 1/2, double placebo-controlled 2x2 factorial trial to determine if caffeine could counteract the sedating and impairing effects of alcohol on simulated driving performance and cognitive tasks in healthy young adults. Results indicated that caffeine did not significantly reduce alcohol-related impairment in driving performance, attention, or reaction time, suggesting that the stimulant does not effectively neutralize the behavioral deficits caused by high-dose alcohol consumption.
