Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mercalm is an oral combination medication containing the first-generation antihistamine dimenhydrinate and the central nervous system stimulant caffeine. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness (kinetosis) in adults and children over six years of age. The dimenhydrinate component acts as an antagonist at histamine H1 and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the vestibular system to suppress nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Caffeine is included to counteract the sedative effects of dimenhydrinate by antagonizing adenosine receptors, thereby promoting wakefulness and maintaining cognitive function during travel.
