This experimental intervention consists of non-alcoholic beer supplemented with caffeine citrate powder. It was developed by researchers at Boston University for use in a randomized controlled trial (NCT00127140) to investigate the acute and residual effects of caffeinated versus non-caffeinated beverages on simulated driving performance and alcohol intoxication. The study aimed to determine if caffeine could offset the cognitive and motor impairments caused by alcohol. The intervention typically matched the caffeine content of commercially available caffeinated alcoholic beverages (approximately 69 mg per 12 oz). Results from the study indicated that caffeine did not significantly mitigate the impairing effects of alcohol on driving or sustained attention.
