calcitriol + calcium

Calcitriol + calcium is a combination therapy utilized as the conventional standard of care for the management of hypoparathyroidism, particularly in clinical research conducted by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D3 (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), acts as an agonist at the vitamin D receptor (VDR) to enhance intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus. Supplemental calcium (often as calcium carbonate) provides the necessary elemental calcium to maintain serum levels in the absence of adequate parathyroid hormone (PTH). This regimen is used to prevent hypocalcemia and its associated symptoms, although it does not address the full physiological spectrum of PTH deficiency, such as impaired renal calcium reabsorption and phosphate excretion.
