Drug intelligence / Profile preview
calcitriol + cholecalciferol is a combination of the active hormonal form of Vitamin D3 (calcitriol) and its precursor (cholecalciferol) being investigated by Grupo Farmasierra for oncological applications. The development program, conducted in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), focuses on the potential of the Vitamin D endocrine system to prevent and treat bladder cancer, particularly in patients undergoing urethral cystectomy. Calcitriol acts as a high-affinity agonist for the Vitamin D receptor (VDR), a nuclear transcription factor that modulates the expression of genes involved in calcium metabolism, immune function, and the inhibition of cell proliferation. By targeting the VDR, this combination aims to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in malignant cells, potentially reducing tumor recurrence and progression in bladder cancer patients.
