Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium + cholecalciferol is a fixed-dose combination of a calcium salt (typically as carbonate or citrate) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). It is used to prevent and treat deficiencies of both calcium and vitamin D, particularly in the elderly or in individuals at risk for osteoporosis. The combination works by providing supplemental calcium for bone mineralization and cholecalciferol to enhance intestinal absorption of dietary calcium. Cholecalciferol itself is converted in the body to its active form (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol), which binds to the vitamin D receptor—a nuclear receptor that regulates gene expression involved in bone metabolism and immune function. This combination is widely available over-the-counter as well as by prescription[5][1][8].
