Overview

Calcium acetate + magnesium carbonate is an oral fixed-dose phosphate-binding medicine marketed as **OsvaRen** for hyperphosphataemia in adults with chronic kidney disease receiving dialysis. Each film-coated tablet contains calcium acetate 435 mg, providing 110 mg elemental calcium, and heavy magnesium carbonate 235 mg, providing 60 mg elemental magnesium. Taken with meals, its calcium and magnesium ions bind dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming poorly absorbed phosphate salts that are eliminated in faeces and thereby lower serum phosphate. The magnesium-containing formulation reduces calcium exposure relative to calcium-only phosphate binders, although serum calcium and magnesium require monitoring because hypercalcaemia and hypermagnesaemia may occur.
