Calcium carbonate + magnesium carbonate is a fixed-dose combination of mineral salts used primarily as a phosphate binder and an antacid. In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), it is utilized to manage hyperphosphatemia by binding to dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble calcium and magnesium phosphate complexes that are subsequently excreted. As an antacid, the combination provides rapid relief from symptoms of dyspepsia and heartburn by neutralizing excess gastric hydrochloric acid. This formulation is often preferred in renal care to provide phosphate control while potentially reducing the total calcium load compared to calcium-only binders and avoiding aluminum-based agents.
