Calcium DTPA + zinc DTPA is a combination of two chelating agents—pentetate calcium trisodium (Ca-DTPA) and pentetate zinc trisodium (Zn-DTPA)—used for the treatment of internal contamination with transuranic elements such as plutonium, americium, or curium. Both agents are salts of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), which acts by binding to these radioactive metals in the body to form stable complexes that are then excreted via urine. Ca-DTPA is more effective when administered within the first 24 hours after exposure; after this period, both Ca-DTPA and Zn-DTPA are considered equally effective. For ongoing therapy beyond the initial dose or when mineral depletion is a concern, Zn-DTPA is preferred due to its lower risk of depleting essential trace metals like zinc and magnesium[2][4][6][8]. This combination approach maximizes efficacy while minimizing adverse effects associated with prolonged chelation.
