Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Calcium and fluoride mouthwash is an investigational two-component topical oral rinse regimen developed by the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. It consists of a calcium pre-rinse (150 mM calcium lactate) followed immediately by a fluoride mouthwash (0.05% sodium fluoride, 226 ppm fluoride). The regimen is designed to optimize fluoride retention and bioavailability in the oral environment (specifically within dental biofilm and saliva) by pre-loading the mouth with calcium, which enhances the formation of calcium fluoride-like reservoirs. This approach is primarily indicated for the prevention and control of dental caries, particularly root caries, in older adults with normal to low salivary flow rates (hyposalivation/dry mouth). It has been evaluated in a Phase 1 randomized crossover clinical trial (NCT04239872).
