Overview

Canagliflozin + glp-1 analogue is a combination therapy consisting of the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor canagliflozin and a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor analogue. Canagliflozin inhibits SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules, resulting in reduced glucose reabsorption and increased urinary glucose excretion. GLP-1 analogues act as agonists at the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion, lowering glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. This combination is used primarily for type 2 diabetes, offering additive (possibly synergistic) effects on glycemic control, weight loss, systolic blood pressure reduction, and improvement of cardiovascular and renal outcomes over monotherapy. Common adverse events may include gastrointestinal symptoms, genitourinary infections, and low risk of hypoglycemia, with some mitigation of adverse metabolic effects when combined.
