Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Canagliflozin + metformin is a fixed-dose oral combination of two antidiabetic agents used as an adjunct to diet and exercise for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Canagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by increasing urinary glucose excretion through inhibition of SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules. Metformin is a biguanide that decreases hepatic glucose production, reduces intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. This combination not only improves glycemic control but also reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (such as heart attack, stroke, or death) in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or diabetic kidney disease[1][2][5][8]. The product was developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
