Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vokanamet is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing canagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride, used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Canagliflozin is an inhibitor of the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2), which is responsible for the majority of glucose reabsorption in the proximal renal tubules; by inhibiting SGLT2, canagliflozin promotes the excretion of glucose in the urine. Metformin is a biguanide that lowers blood glucose levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Developed by Janssen, Vokanamet is typically used when metformin alone or in combination with other glucose-lowering medicinal products does not provide adequate glycemic control. The combination provides complementary mechanisms of action to manage blood glucose levels through both insulin-independent and insulin-sensitizing pathways.
