Canagliflozin + probenecid is a combination of two small molecule drugs. Canagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used to manage hyperglycemia in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in patients with established cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and lower the risk of end-stage kidney disease and related complications. It works by inhibiting SGLT2 in the kidneys, increasing urinary glucose excretion[1][2][4][6]. Probenecid is a uricosuric agent primarily used to treat gouty arthritis and hyperuricemia; it acts by inhibiting renal tubular reabsorption of urate at the proximal convoluted tubule, thereby increasing urinary excretion of uric acid[5]. Probenecid also inhibits renal secretion of various weak organic acids, affecting plasma concentrations of certain drugs. The combination may be considered for patients requiring both glycemic control (via canagliflozin) and management or prevention of hyperuricemia/gout (via probenecid).
