Overview

Canagliflozin + warfarin is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, each with distinct mechanisms and indications. Canagliflozin is an oral antidiabetic agent classified as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It lowers blood glucose by inhibiting SGLT2 in the kidneys, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. Canagliflozin is primarily indicated for type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control, reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with established heart disease, and slow progression of kidney disease[4][8]. Warfarin is an oral anticoagulant that acts as a vitamin K antagonist by inhibiting the vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1), thereby reducing synthesis of active clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X. Warfarin is used to prevent and treat thromboembolic disorders such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation-related stroke risk, and prosthetic heart valve thromboprophylaxis[5]. The combination may be prescribed when both glycemic control in type 2 diabetes and anticoagulation are required; studies indicate no clinically significant pharmacokinetic interaction between these agents[1].
