Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A novel lipid-based oral formulation of cannabidiol (CBD) developed by King's College London to address the poor oral bioavailability and significant food effect associated with standard CBD formulations. CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that interacts with the endocannabinoid system and various neurotransmitter receptors. This specific formulation uses EU pharmacopoeia-approved lipid excipients to enhance absorption in the fasted state, achieving approximately nine times higher plasma exposure than standard powder formulations in Phase 1 trials. It is being investigated for central nervous system disorders, including psychotic disorders, epilepsy, anxiety, and substance use disorders.
