Overview

CBD + anti-PD-L1 is a preclinical combination therapy consisting of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, and an anti-PD-L1 monoclonal antibody (specifically atezolizumab in human research contexts). Developed by researchers at the Korea University College of Medicine, this combination is primarily investigated for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). CBD acts as an immune modulator by activating the cGAS–STING pathway, which subsequently upregulates the expression of PD-L1 on tumor cells. This upregulation sensitizes the tumor to immune checkpoint inhibition by the anti-PD-L1 antibody, which blocks the interaction between PD-L1 and PD-1 on T cells, thereby restoring and enhancing the anti-tumor immune response. This synergistic approach aims to convert immunologically "cold" tumors into "hot" tumors that are more responsive to immunotherapy.
