Overview
cannabidiol + arnica is a topical combination therapy being developed by the Universidad del Valle de México, Campus Cuernavaca, for the treatment of pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. The formulation combines cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid, with extracts from *Arnica montana*. Cannabidiol is thought to exert analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the endocannabinoid system (acting as a negative allosteric modulator of CB1 and CB2 receptors) and desensitizing TRPV1 ion channels. *Arnica montana* contains active compounds such as helenalin, which inhibit the activation of the transcription factor NF-kappaB, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. This combination is currently being evaluated in a randomized factorial pilot trial to determine its efficacy as an adjunct to home-based quadriceps isometric exercises in community-dwelling older adults.
