Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cannabidiol-basic fibroblast growth factor refers to a combination of cannabidiol (CBD) and components related to fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) or their receptors, currently under investigation for synergistic therapeutic effects in various conditions. In colorectal cancer, cannabidiol has been shown to enhance the efficacy of fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) inhibitors, such as AZD4547, by inducing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, leading to increased cancer cell death. This suggests a potential strategy to overcome resistance and improve outcomes in targeted cancer therapies. For spinal cord injury (SCI) repair, an injectable hydrogel co-loaded with cannabidiol micelles and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is being developed. This combination modulates the inflammatory microenvironment by promoting microglial polarization via cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2R) activation and regulates the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons, leading to neuroprotection and improved motor function. Additionally, cannabidiol alone has demonstrated potential in wound healing by promoting fibroblast proliferation and the expression of factors like TGF-β1, VEGF, and NF-κB, and in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by modulating fibrotic and inflammatory signaling pathways in intestinal myofibroblasts. The specific 'basic fibroblast growth factor' component in these combinations can refer to either the targeting of fibroblast growth factor receptors with inhibitors or the direct use of specific fibroblast growth factors like FGF21.
