Overview

Cannabidiol + buprenorphine is a fixed-dose combination therapy under investigation for pain management and opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist of the mu-opioid receptor and antagonist at the kappa-opioid receptor, providing analgesia and reducing withdrawal and cravings. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid from cannabis, known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects and interacts with multiple targets, including CB1/CB2 receptors and various ion channels. In preclinical studies, the combination demonstrates synergistic analgesia and attenuates buprenorphine-induced respiratory depression. This combination is being developed as a safer alternative to traditional opioid analgesics, with opioid-sparing properties and improved safety profile, potentially minimizing the risks associated with opioid therapy[2].
