Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cannabis + Olea europaea is a combination product consisting of extracts from Cannabis sativa (commonly referred to as "grass" or marijuana) and Olea europaea (olive), typically in the form of an infusion where cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis are extracted into extra virgin olive oil. This preparation leverages the lipophilic nature of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, which are efficiently absorbed when dissolved in fats like olive oil. The resulting product contains active compounds including THC, CBD, other minor cannabinoids (CBN, CBDA), and a spectrum of terpenes depending on the strain used. Olive oil serves not only as a carrier but also contributes its own bioactive polyphenols with antioxidant properties. The mechanism of action is multifaceted: - Cannabinoids act primarily via cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the endocannabinoid system to modulate pain perception, inflammation, appetite regulation, spasticity in multiple sclerosis, nausea/vomiting associated with chemotherapy or AIDS-related weight loss. - Terpenes may contribute additional anti-inflammatory or neuroprotective effects through synergistic interactions ("entourage effect"). - Olive-derived polyphenols such as oleuropein provide antioxidant and potential antidiabetic activity. This combination is most commonly used for oral consumption but can also be applied topically for localized relief. It is not an approved pharmaceutical drug but rather a compounded preparation often used in medical cannabis programs or self-prepared by patients for symptom management[1][2][3][4][7].
