Cannabis with tetrahydrocannabinol without cannabidiol is a specific research formulation of vaporised cannabis flower containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) but lacking cannabidiol (CBD). It was developed and utilized by University College London (UCL) for the CannTeenA study (2019-2021) to investigate the acute subjective, behavioral, and neural effects of THC in isolation, specifically comparing responses between adolescents and adults. THC acts as a partial agonist at the Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) within the endocannabinoid system. By excluding CBD, which is thought to modulate some of THC's effects, researchers aimed to better understand the specific risks of high-THC cannabis on memory, reward processing, and the induction of psychotic-like symptoms.
