This is a multi-agent combination regimen consisting of capecitabine (an oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil), fluorouracil (a pyrimidine analog antimetabolite), huachansu (a traditional Chinese medicine extract derived from toad venom with purported anticancer properties), and oxaliplatin (a platinum-based chemotherapeutic). Capecitabine is converted in vivo to 5-fluorouracil, which inhibits thymidylate synthase and disrupts DNA and RNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. Oxaliplatin forms DNA crosslinks that inhibit DNA replication and transcription. Huachansu contains bufadienolides that may induce apoptosis and inhibit tumor growth through multiple mechanisms, though its precise molecular targets are less well characterized. This combination would be considered investigational; while combinations of capecitabine or fluorouracil with oxaliplatin are standard for colorectal cancer treatment[1][2][3][6], the addition of huachansu is not part of established Western regimens but has been explored in some integrative oncology settings.
