Overview

Capecitabine + oxaliplatin is a combination chemotherapy regimen commonly referred to as CAPOX or XELOX. It consists of two drugs: - Capecitabine (an oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil) and - Oxaliplatin (a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent). This combination is primarily used for the treatment of colorectal cancer but is also indicated for other gastrointestinal cancers such as gastric and biliary tract cancers. Capecitabine works by being converted in the body to 5-fluorouracil, which inhibits DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. Oxaliplatin causes DNA crosslinking and damage through its platinum moiety, leading to apoptosis in cancer cells. Together, these agents target rapidly dividing tumor cells via complementary mechanisms that disrupt DNA replication and repair[1][2][3][5][6].
