Overview

Carbamazepine + celecoxib is a combination therapy being evaluated for the treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia. Carbamazepine is a well-established anticonvulsant that acts as a sodium channel blocker, stabilizing neuronal membranes and inhibiting repetitive firing. Celecoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. The combination is being studied in a multicenter, randomized controlled trial (ANT-TN) led by Beijing Tiantan Hospital to determine if the addition of an anti-inflammatory agent to standard carbamazepine therapy provides superior pain relief and improved quality of life for patients compared to carbamazepine monotherapy.
