Overview

This is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, carbamazepine and citalopram. Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant and analgesic primarily used to treat seizure disorders (such as epilepsy), trigeminal neuralgia (a type of nerve pain), and bipolar disorder. It acts mainly by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels in the brain, stabilizing hyperexcited nerve membranes, inhibiting repetitive neuronal firing, and reducing synaptic propagation of excitatory impulses[3][4]. Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder. It works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain through inhibition of its reuptake into presynaptic cells[7][8]. When combined, these drugs may interact pharmacokinetically; carbamazepine induces hepatic enzymes (notably CYP3A4), which can lower plasma concentrations of citalopram and potentially reduce its efficacy[5][6][8]. This combination should be monitored closely due to possible reduced antidepressant effect and increased risk for side effects.
