Carboplatin + erlotinib is a combination regimen of two small molecule drugs used in oncology. Carboplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent that causes DNA crosslinking and apoptosis in rapidly dividing cells. Erlotinib is an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks EGFR signaling, thereby inhibiting tumor cell proliferation and survival. This combination has been studied primarily for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), particularly in patients with specific EGFR mutations. However, clinical trials have shown that adding erlotinib to standard chemotherapy regimens containing carboplatin does not confer a significant survival advantage over chemotherapy alone in previously untreated advanced NSCLC[1][6]. The safety profile of the combination is generally consistent with the known toxicities of each drug, including increased risk for rash and diarrhea from erlotinib[1][2].
