Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of carboplatin and paclitaxel—two standard cytotoxic agents widely used in oncology—plus sepantronium bromide (YM155), a small-molecule selective survivin suppressant. Carboplatin and paclitaxel are platinum-based and taxane chemotherapies that disrupt DNA synthesis and microtubule function, respectively. Sepantronium bromide was developed to inhibit survivin expression, an anti-apoptotic protein overexpressed in many cancers. The rationale for combining these agents is to enhance cancer cell death by targeting both proliferative pathways and apoptosis resistance[1][2][5]. The regimen has been studied in clinical trials for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) but did not demonstrate improved response rates compared to standard doublet therapy[1].
