Overview

This is a combination of carboxymethylcellulose and chloroquine. Carboxymethylcellulose is a cellulose derivative commonly used as an excipient, thickener, or lubricant in pharmaceutical formulations, particularly for ocular use to relieve dryness and irritation by binding to corneal epithelial cells and promoting wound healing[6]. Chloroquine is an antimalarial and amebicidal agent that inhibits heme polymerase in Plasmodium species, leading to toxic heme accumulation within the parasite; it also raises endosomal pH, interfering with viral entry into cells[3][4][8]. There are no widely recognized fixed-dose combination products of these two agents for clinical use. However, research has explored the use of carboxymethylcellulose as a drug delivery vehicle or stabilizer for other compounds (such as Poly ICLC) in experimental settings with chloroquine[1], but not as an active therapeutic combination.
