Overview
Carboxymethylcellulose + glycerine is a combination ophthalmic preparation used primarily for the symptomatic relief of dry eye disease. Carboxymethylcellulose acts as a lubricant and increases tear viscosity, mimicking natural tears to maintain ocular surface moisture and protect against further irritation. Glycerine functions as an ophthalmic demulcent, forming a soothing film over the mucous membrane surfaces of the eye to provide additional lubrication and comfort. Together, these agents temporarily relieve burning, irritation, and discomfort associated with dry eyes due to insufficient or poor-quality tear production[3][7]. The combination does not treat underlying causes but alleviates symptoms by stabilizing the tear film and reducing evaporation.
