It combines carboxymethylcellulose sodium, which acts as a lubricant, with purite (stabilized oxychloro complex), which serves as a preservative. ## Drug Information Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is a lubricating agent similar to natural tears that provides temporary relief of burning and discomfort due to dryness of the eye or exposure to wind or sun[1][4][7]. When combined with purite (stabilized oxychloro complex), it creates an effective eye drop formulation for treating dry eyes. ## Mechanism of Action Carboxymethylcellulose binds to the surface of corneal epithelial cells via its glucopyranose subunits binding to glucose receptors GLUT-1[6]. The residence time of carboxymethylcellulose bound to corneal cells is approximately 2 hours[6]. This binding stimulates corneal epithelial cell attachment, migration, and re-epithelialization of corneal wounds[6]. In clinical studies, ophthalmic treatment with sodium carboxymethylcellulose resulted in a diminished frequency of symptoms compared to placebo groups in patients with mild or moderate forms of eye dryness[6]. It exhibits protective actions on the ocular surface in various applications, mediating cytoprotective effects when applied prior to contact lenses and reducing the incidence of epithelial defects during LASIK[6]. ## Formulation The typical formulation contains carboxymethylcellulose sodium at 0.5% w/v concentration and purite (stabilized oxychloro complex) at 0.005% concentration[2][8]. Additional inactive ingredients may include: - Boric acid - Calcium chloride - Magnesium chloride - Potassium chloride - Water - Sodium chlorite - Sodium borate[1] Some formulations may also contain glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, sodium citrate dihydrate, erythritol, and other ingredients to enhance effectiveness and comfort[8]. ## Side Effects Common side effects may include: - Eye discharge - Itching[7]
