This entry refers to a combination of two agents used in cancer immunotherapy research and treatment. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion that is overexpressed in several cancers, including colorectal cancer. It serves as both a tumor marker and an immunotherapy target. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis used as an intravesical immunotherapy for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and as a vaccine against tuberculosis. In oncology research, CEA-targeted vaccines or therapies aim to stimulate the immune system to recognize and attack CEA-expressing tumor cells; BCG acts as an immune stimulant or adjuvant by activating local immune responses that can enhance anti-tumor activity. The combination of CEA-based antigens with BCG has been explored experimentally to boost anti-tumor immunity by combining specific targeting (CEA) with broad immune activation (BCG). This approach remains investigational for most indications outside standard BCG use in bladder cancer.
