Cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs) are an autologous cell therapy composed of cardiac progenitor cells harvested from a patient's own myocardial tissue. Developed by Okayama University, this therapy is specifically investigated for pediatric patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The cells are administered via intracoronary infusion. The mechanism of action is primarily paracrine, involving the secretion of exosomes containing microRNAs that migrate to damaged heart tissue to attenuate cardiac fibrosis and inhibit cardiomyocyte death, thereby promoting functional recovery of the myocardium. Clinical evaluation has been conducted through the TICAP-DCM Phase 1 trial, which demonstrated safety and preliminary improvements in cardiac function in children with DCM.
