Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of three alkylating agents—carmustine (BCNU), cisplatin (CDDP), and cyclophosphamide (CTX). The regimen is used as high-dose chemotherapy primarily in the treatment of certain cancers such as primary breast cancer and relapsed or refractory Hodgkin's disease. It is often administered prior to autologous stem cell transplantation or bone marrow transplantation. Each component acts by damaging DNA and inhibiting cancer cell replication through different mechanisms. Carmustine and cyclophosphamide are both alkylating agents that form cross-links in DNA, while cisplatin forms platinum-DNA adducts leading to apoptosis. This combination aims to maximize cytotoxicity against tumor cells with non-overlapping toxicities.
