Overview

This is a combination of two drugs used primarily in oncology clinical trials. Carmustine (BCNU) is a nitrosourea alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA and RNA, leading to inhibition of DNA replication and transcription, and ultimately cell death. It also carbamoylates proteins, inhibiting key enzymatic processes. Interferon alpha-2b is a recombinant cytokine with immunomodulatory, antiviral, and antiproliferative properties; it binds to type I interferon receptors (IFNAR1/IFNAR2), activating the JAK-STAT pathway to upregulate immune response genes and inhibit tumor cell proliferation. The combination has been studied in high-grade glioma (with radiation therapy), multiple myeloma (as part of multi-agent regimens), melanoma (in chemotherapy combinations), but has not shown clear survival benefit over standard regimens and may increase toxicity[1][3][5].
