Carmustine + procarbazine + vincristine is a combination chemotherapy regimen sometimes referred to as PBV. It consists of three small molecule chemotherapeutic agents: - Carmustine (also known as BCNU), an alkylating nitrosourea that cross-links DNA and RNA, inhibiting DNA replication and transcription. - Procarbazine, an alkylating agent that inhibits DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis by causing methylation of guanine. - Vincristine, a vinca alkaloid that binds to tubulin and inhibits microtubule formation in the mitotic spindle, arresting cell division at metaphase. This combination has been used primarily for the treatment of brain tumors such as gliomas and other central nervous system malignancies. The mechanism involves targeting rapidly dividing cancer cells through multiple cytotoxic pathways[1]. The regimen is less commonly used than the similar PCV (procarbazine + lomustine + vincristine) protocol but has been studied for efficacy and toxicity in neuro-oncology settings[1].
