Overview

Carmustine + recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor is a combination therapy consisting of carmustine, a nitrosourea alkylating agent, and recombinant human GM-CSF (granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor), a cytokine that stimulates the production and function of white blood cells. Carmustine exerts its antitumor effect by cross-linking DNA and RNA, leading to cell death, particularly in rapidly dividing cancer cells. It is primarily used in the treatment of brain tumors (such as glioma), Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma[4]. Recombinant human GM-CSF (e.g., sargramostim) acts as an immune modulator by promoting proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells into neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, and dendritic cells[3][6]. In clinical settings involving high-dose chemotherapy regimens like those including carmustine—where myelosuppression is dose-limiting—recombinant GM-CSF can accelerate neutrophil recovery after bone marrow transplantation or intensive chemotherapy[1][6]. The combination aims to maximize antitumor efficacy while reducing infection risk through faster hematologic recovery.
