Overview

CBSST + oxytocin is a combination intervention consisting of Cognitive Behavioral Social Skills Training (CBSST) and intranasal oxytocin, developed by the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the University of California, San Diego. This therapeutic approach was designed to address social dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Oxytocin, a nine-amino acid peptide hormone, acts as an agonist at oxytocin receptors in the brain to promote prosocial effects, reduce social anxiety, and enhance the salience of social cues. CBSST is a psychosocial intervention that combines cognitive behavioral therapy with social skills training to challenge defeatist performance beliefs and improve functional outcomes. In a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01752712), the combination was tested using 80 IU of intranasal oxytocin daily alongside 48 sessions of CBSST; however, the study did not find significant improvements in social functioning compared to CBSST plus placebo.
