Overview

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy plus Nicotine Replacement Therapy (CBT + NRT) is a combination treatment approach for tobacco use disorder and smoking cessation. CBT is a structured, evidence-based psychological therapy that helps individuals identify and change maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors associated with smoking. It provides coping strategies to manage cravings, avoid triggers, and prevent relapse. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) includes pharmacological products such as nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges that deliver controlled doses of nicotine to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings without the harmful toxins found in cigarettes. The combination of CBT with NRT has been shown in multiple studies to be more effective than either intervention alone for increasing quit rates among smokers[3][6][7][8]. This multimodal approach addresses both the behavioral/psychological aspects of addiction (via CBT) and the physiological dependence on nicotine (via NRT).
