Overview

This is an autologous cell therapy involving CD133+ hematopoietic stem cells, developed by Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid. The therapy is designed for patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRLM) who are candidates for major liver resection but possess insufficient remnant liver volume (RLV). The process involves mobilizing stem cells from the patient's peripheral blood using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), followed by the selection of CD133+ cells. These cells are then infused, often into the portal vein in conjunction with portal vein embolization (PVE), to stimulate liver regeneration and compensatory hypertrophy. This regenerative medicine approach aims to increase the RLV to a safe threshold (typically >40%), thereby expanding the pool of patients eligible for curative surgical resection.
