CD133+ enriched bone marrow progenitor cells are a population of cells isolated from bone marrow based on the expression of the CD133 (also known as prominin-1) surface marker, which is present on hematopoietic and endothelial progenitor cells. These cells are enriched for progenitor populations with the potential for hematopoietic and angiogenic activity. They are used investigationally in regenerative medicine, primarily as an autologous cell therapy, aiming to repair or regenerate tissues damaged by disease or injury. Mechanistically, they exert their therapeutic effect primarily through stimulating neovascularization (promoting blood vessel formation) and possibly supporting tissue regeneration via paracrine mechanisms. CD133+ enriched bone marrow progenitor cells have been explored in clinical trials for indications including cerebral palsy and myocardial infarction, with administration routes such as intrathecal, intracoronary, and intramyocardial injection. Early-phase clinical studies report that the procedures are generally feasible and safe, with signals of potential benefits including improved neurological or cardiac function[2][3][4][5][6].
