CD19 CAR-γδ T cell is an investigational universal (allogeneic) chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy being developed by the Air Force Military Medical University in China. Unlike conventional CAR-T therapies that utilize alpha-beta (αβ) T cells, this product employs gamma-delta (γδ) T cells. These cells naturally possess MHC-independent antigen recognition, which reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and potentially allows for "off-the-shelf" administration without HLA matching. The therapy is engineered to express a CAR targeting the CD19 antigen, a protein found on the surface of B cells. By targeting and depleting CD19-positive B cells, the therapy aims to eliminate the source of pathogenic autoantibodies in autoimmune conditions. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for the treatment of relapsed or refractory autoimmune nephropathies, specifically lupus nephritis, IgA nephropathy, and membranous nephropathy.
