Overview

CD34+ selected bone marrow mononuclear cells is an autologous cell therapy developed by Columbia University for the treatment of end-stage congestive heart failure. The therapy involves the isolation of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells from a patient's own bone marrow, which are then injected intramyocardially during the surgical implantation of a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD). These cells are hypothesized to enhance myocardial recovery and promote neo-vascularization through the secretion of various growth factors and cytokines, potentially improving cardiac function and allowing for earlier removal of mechanical support or better outcomes while awaiting heart transplantation.
