CD34+ stem cell infusion is a specialized cell therapy utilized for patients experiencing graft failure or poor graft function following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). This therapeutic approach involves the selection and concentration of CD34-positive hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells from a donor (often the original transplant donor) using an automated immunomagnetic selection system, such as the Miltenyi CliniMACS device. By infusing a concentrated dose of these progenitor cells, the treatment aims to boost and restore bone marrow function and blood cell production. The selection process typically depletes T-cells from the graft, which helps to reduce the risk of inducing or exacerbating graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) while providing the necessary cells for hematopoietic recovery. This specific program at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center provides compassionate access to this technology for patients with limited options after transplant failure.
