Overview

Cefazolin + tobramycin is a combination of two antibiotics frequently used in clinical practice, especially as fortified topical solutions for the treatment of serious bacterial infections such as bacterial keratitis (corneal ulcers) and peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis. Cefazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, primarily targeting Gram-positive organisms. Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and providing broad-spectrum activity against many Gram-negative bacteria. The combination offers synergistic or additive antibacterial effects, expanding coverage across both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens[1][3][5]. This regimen is often chosen when broad empirical coverage is needed or when resistance patterns necessitate dual therapy.
