Overview

This is a combination of three antibacterial agents—cefepime, piperacillin, and tazobactam. Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Piperacillin is an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin that also inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis via PBPs, with activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Tazobactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor that protects piperacillin from enzymatic degradation by β-lactamases produced by resistant bacteria, thereby extending its spectrum of activity. This combination would theoretically provide broad-spectrum coverage against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some resistant strains[9][10][6]. However, there are no known approved or marketed products containing all three agents together as a single formulation; they are typically used separately or in dual combinations for severe hospital-acquired infections such as pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), sepsis, febrile neutropenia, and skin/soft tissue infections[3][6][9][10].
