Cefoperazone + mezlocillin is a combination of two beta-lactam antibiotics used primarily for empiric therapy in patients with serious infections, such as febrile neutropenia in cancer or bone marrow transplant patients. Cefoperazone is a third-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Mezlocillin is an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin that also acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through PBPs, with activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The combination aims to broaden the antibacterial spectrum and enhance efficacy against mixed or resistant infections[1][3][6][7].
