Cefoperazone + sulbactam is a combination antibiotic consisting of two active components: cefoperazone, a third-generation cephalosporin (β-lactam) antibiotic, and sulbactam, a β-lactamase inhibitor. Cefoperazone acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins in bacterial cell walls and inhibiting the final stage of cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis. It is effective against a broad range of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria. However, many bacteria produce β-lactamases that can degrade β-lactams like cefoperazone. Sulbactam inhibits these enzymes irreversibly, protecting cefoperazone from degradation and extending its antibacterial spectrum to include organisms resistant to other β-lactams. The combination is used for serious infections such as respiratory tract infections (upper and lower), urinary tract infections (upper and lower), intra-abdominal infections, septicemia, meningitis, skin infections, bone infections, endometritis, and others[1][3][5][6].
