Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cefotaxime + tazobactam is a fixed-dose combination of two agents: cefotaxime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Cefotaxime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), resulting in bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Tazobactam has minimal antibacterial activity on its own but irreversibly inhibits various beta-lactamases (including ESBLs and AmpC enzymes), thereby protecting cefotaxime from enzymatic degradation and extending its antibacterial spectrum to include many resistant organisms. This combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute bacterial infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing strains, especially in respiratory and urinary tract infections[2][3]. The optimal ratio for clinical use is typically 6 parts cefotaxime to 1 part tazobactam[2].
