Cefoxitin + gentamicin is a combination of two antibiotics used together for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, particularly in hospital settings. Cefoxitin is a second-generation cephamycin antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. It has broad-spectrum activity against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and resulting in bactericidal activity, especially against gram-negative organisms. This combination may be used empirically or when mixed infections are suspected, such as intra-abdominal or pelvic infections.
